Kitchen design

January 30, 2019 by Ohio State News

What’s in and out in 2019

Kitchen renovations of any size take some careful planning to be sure you make the most of your investment of time and money. Those small details are what can make the difference in the look of your space, especially if you want to keep your kitchen timeless. Whether your goal is a major remodel for the benefit of your family, or a facelift aimed at resale value, making your kitchen functional is always a key. But what else are people looking for in kitchens in 2019?

Color choices – All white is OUT and warm, moody colors are IN

Why? While white is timeless, it tends to be stark and it’s hard to keep clean. Instead choose deeper hues, including warm greens and terracotas for walls, cabinets and counters. To brighten a small space, you might pair lighter upper cabinets with darker lower cabinets.

Cabinets and appliances – Glossy finishes and stainless steel are OUT and matte finishes are IN

Why? Stainless steel is dated and is difficult to keep free of fingerprints. Matte finishes are easier to keep clean for both cabinets and appliances, and they tend to be timeless, allowing for choices of neutral or bold colors. You will also want to skip the heavily designed cabinet doors in favor of simple, clean lines.

Countertops – Granite is OUT and quartz is IN

Why? Quartz provides a durable, almost indestructible surface that needs minimal care compared with granite, with its porous surface that can encourage bacteria build-up. You may also consider a wood countertop to add warmth in a lighter colored kitchen. They require more care, but they can add a unique touch.

Islands – Multi-level is OUT and single level is IN

Why? A single-level island provides more prep space than a multi-level island, while also creating an open space that invites conversation in kitchens that highlight entertainment as much as food prep.

Backsplashes and floors – Subway tiles are OUT and shapes/patterns are IN

Why? Subway tiles—placed in traditional rows or in zig zag patterns—have become extremely common. Instead choose Spanish and Moroccan inspired tiles in bright colors, shapes and patterns to make a statement and create an exotic feel. Also consider adding pop by using a contrasting grout with a light-colored tile.

Sinks – Farmhouse style is OUT and sinks in unique colors and materials are IN

Why? Like subway tiles, farmhouse sinks have become extremely common. Sinks fashioned from fireclay, copper and acrylic can add interesting textures and colors to your kitchen, especially when paired with statement faucets and accessories. Also consider a sink with a sliding cover to create more prep space in a small kitchen.

Other trends to consider

In today’s modern kitchens, the emphasis is on less, so keep the overall feel clean and simple with minimal trim and molding and little clutter on the counters. You may consider undercounter versions of appliances that traditionally sit on your counter to create maximum space.

Simple doesn’t have to mean boring, however. Don’t be afraid to incorporate the unexpected, including reclaimed furniture, lighting and accessories in unusual styles and bright colors. Stick with traditional, comfortable seating rather than bar seating or bar height tables.

Your décor should work with the simple, functional kitchen you create. Skip the faux finishes and flashy graphic signs in favor of clean walls and tasteful art pieces. Decorating with your pots is also out. Instead opt for deep drawers that keep your pots at hand when you need them.
