As hearing loss rates continue to rise, the relatively new option for over-the-counter hearing aids has become more popular among adults who struggle with hearing in some environments. Unfortunately, these less expensive hearing aids are not for everyone.
In an August 2022 ruling, the FDA approved the sale of hearing aids directly to adult consumers without a prescription. While this has made it easier and cheaper for people to get hearing aids, bypassing a hearing loss expert means the consumer is guessing whether they have hearing loss, and, if so, what is causing it.
The facts on hearing loss
Hearing loss predictably increases with age, so as the US population gets older, the number of people suffering from hearing loss grows. Across the country and around the world, however, hearing loss has increased among all ages, possibly due to lack of protection for those living or working in environments with damaging noise levels as well as medications that are now being prescribed that have the side effect of causing hearing damage.
In the US, recent statistics show that as much as 14% of the population is struggling with some level of hearing loss. The cause of said hearing loss, however, could be multiple possibilities:
- Blockage in the ear canal
- Injury to the outer ear
- Damage or infection in the inner ear
- Scarring on the ear drum
- Damage to the auditory nerve due to illness or medication
The only way to understand your hearing loss and what remedies may help is to schedule an exam and hearing screening with a licensed audiologist.
The facts on OTC hearing aids
OTC hearing aids can be a solution for people with mild or moderate hearing loss. They can cost as little as $200 a pair and are typically not more than $1,000. For those who can’t afford traditional hearing aids they are a better choice than a basic hearing amplifier because they work like regular hearing aids by amplifying only certain sounds.
This one-size-fits-all solution has several disadvantages, however, especially for people with specific hearing issues or more severe hearing loss.
- Settings are extremely basic, so ability to adjust for better hearing in different environments is limited
- No customization for fit and comfort
- No access to an expert who can manage your equipment for your unique needs
- Repairs and maintenance are the responsibility of the buyer
- Consumer protection is not guaranteed, so if you are unhappy with the product, you may not be able to return it for a refund
- Buyers cannot know if they are good candidates for OTC hearing aids without an exam by a licensed audiologist
Traditional hearing aids do come with a higher price tag, but they also come with cutting edge technology and expert care to ensure optimum comfort and performance when it matters most. Your care from a licensed audiologist is ongoing, so you always have access to the best treatment and technology for your level and type of hearing loss.
