Landscaping in early spring

Landscaping in early spring

The first hint of spring gets many of us outside and ready to begin preparing for the warm spring and summer months. If you are itching to get started on the yard work, there are some specific projects that are best done during these early, cool months.

Clearing trees of dead and overgrown limbs is important both for the health of the tree and the safety of your family. Spring storms are notorious for bringing dead limbs down on homes, sheds and garages, so the sooner you can remove them, the better.

Shrubs and perennials also should be pruned and cleared of dead limbs and overgrowth. Early pruning encourages new growth by allowing more air and sunlight to get to the plant.

You may also take this time to remove debris from last year’s annuals, turning over soil to allow decomposition, which puts more nutrients into your soil for the upcoming season.

Early spring is also the best time to plan a landscaping project. By first identifying the dimensions of a new project and obstacles you must work around, you can be assured of getting your new plantings in the ground in a timely fashion. Early spring is the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials.
