The stay-at-home order and request that workers operate out of home offices has kept traffic on roads a little lighter these last few months. Accident numbers were down significantly in April according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.
All of this is great news for Ohio drivers but not a reason to let down your guard. As businesses slowly reopen, more workers and clients will be on the roads. With summer weather in full swing, Northeast Ohioans will be venturing out to parks and trails. Some will be on motorcycles, which can catch drivers off guard.
Accident rates frequently rise during the summer months, and despite the uncertain times, police and highway patrol expect an increase from those lower numbers of April and May.
Protect yourself
Many accidents are avoidable if you practice defensive driving. Keep several things in mind as you travel on highways, urban and suburban streets, and country roads.
- Motorcycles, popular during the summer months, can be hard to see, so look carefully as you enter intersections.
- Children, pets, bicycles, and skateboards will be in abundance on neighborhood streets, so keep your speed down.
- Be alert for slow-moving vehicles, farm equipment and deer as you travel along country roads.
- On expressways, travel in the right lane, using the left lane for passing only.
- Watch for vehicles that are moving at a high rate of speed or frequently changing lanes.
- Take breaks on long trips to avoid fatigue.
When accidents happen
Even the most meticulous drivers will likely find themselves involved in an accident at some point. Anticipating such a situation will make it easier to handle when that time comes.
- Be sure your insurance policy is current, with coverage that makes sense for your driving habits.
- Check that your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is sufficient should an at-fault driver not have appropriate coverage.
- Purchase a roadside service membership or check that your membership is current.
- Carry contact information for your mechanic and collision center so you can quickly alert them if your car is damaged.
- If you are in an accident, stay with your car and be sure to get contact and insurance information from the other driver.
