It seems to happen every time. You get your car to the repair shop and that thing it was doing stops. How can your mechanic fix your car if he can’t see, hear or smell what you did?
Suddenly your description of the problem is crucial to getting it addressed. But providing the needed details to properly address the problem can be difficult if you haven’t been paying close attention. You know your car best, so when you notice something that seems off, make a mental note—or better yet, write it down.
Knowing the technical terms is not necessary in your verbal description or your written notes. A layman’s description with as much detail as possible will be far more useful for your auto technician.
Consider the following common complaints from car owners and the additional information a repair shop might need:
- My car pulls to the right/left! Does this happen consistently? Is it more pronounced at higher speeds? Have you recently hit a curb or pothole?
- The engine is making squealing sounds! Do you hear it when the engine is idling or when you accelerate? Is it constant or does it stop after a few seconds?
- I hear a grinding sound! Does it happen while braking? Do you hear it again when accelerating after a stop? How long has it been happening?
- My car rumbles when I start it! Did the rumbling come on gradually or suddenly? Does it get louder when you accelerate?
- I have to add oil between oil changes! How often are you adding oil? Are there stains on your driveway or garage floor where you park your car? Does your car give off a foul odor when running? Do you see bluish exhaust fumes coming from the tailpipe?
Remember too that your car is equipped with warning lights. Don’t ignore them! Your manual tells you what the symbols mean and it’s important that you contact a professional right away, especially for “check engine” or “temperature” or anytime you are not sure why a light came on.
