Don’t wait to check your brakes

February 2, 2017 by Ohio State News

Don’t wait to check your brakes

With another couple of months of ice and snow in the forecast, you will need all the braking power you can get from your vehicle. Don’t wait to schedule that check-up, especially if you suspect your brakes may need service.

Have you heard grinding when you brake? Does the brake pedal feel spongy when you step on it, or does it seem to drop too close to the floor? Sometimes your brakes simply need an adjustment, but if you need to add or replace brake fluid, or, more importantly, if your pads and rotors are worn and need to be replaced, you should act quickly.

Driving safely in ice and snow requires starting and stopping more slowly and deliberately, and your brakes must be in top working order. Be aware of how your brakes feel as you stop. If you have antilock brakes, your brakes will pulsate when you stop suddenly or if your car begins to slide on ice. Keep your foot fully engaged on your brake pedal to allow this system to work.

However, if you feel similar pulsating in a non-emergency situation, you may need your brakes adjusted by a professional.

For more information about brake safety, or to schedule a check-up for your vehicle, contact Sawyerwood’s ASE-certified professional brake repair technicians in the Akron, Springfield, Lakemore, or surrounding Ohio areas.
