Winter a great time to drill your new water well

January 11, 2018 by Ohio State News

So, you are thinking about waiting until spring to replace your aging water well. Or maybe you just spoke with your builder and you are still several months away from breaking ground on your new home. Best to push the well drilling to summer, right?

Wrong! Water well drillers work through the winter and encourage you to drill before spring if possible—drilling through frozen ground is no more difficult than drilling through rock. Your well driller actually prefers working in the winter, when the frozen ground eliminates the schedule changes that inevitably come in the spring when ground is too muddy to set up the drilling equipment.

You also will find your driller’s schedule more accommodating. They may encourage winter drilling, but construction is still more popular in warmer months. Plan ahead for a winter installation, and your driller will probably be available in a week or two, whereas he may be running as much as two months behind in spring and summer.

But if your builder plans to dig your basement in the spring, is it advisable to put the well in first? Drillers say there are benefits to getting the well in while the lot is still vacant, especially if the first location doesn’t work out and he has to drill a second time. Working ahead of the builder avoids a well issue causing a delay for the builder. A working well also provides a water source for your contractors who would otherwise have to bring water.

For new construction projects, water well drillers are usually happy to meet with you to set a time table for your vacant lot. If the footprint of the house is staked and the Health Department has identified the best place for a septic system, a driller can then take the appropriate measurements to mark the best place for your water well. Once you have received your well permit from the Health Department, your well can be drilled, even during those cold winter months.
